What Is Kpop Dance?

Kpop dance means Korean Pop Dance in a longer term. It is a spin off from the Korean wave (or Hallyu), which has gotten increasingly popular of late not just in asia, but also in US and Europe.

The Korean Wave

The Korean wave first started off from all the sappy and romantic Korean dramas in the early 2000s, and then gradually broaden to the Korean pop music where Rain and BoA were known to be dominating the scene back then.

The few years saw a new generation of young artistes exploding into the scene, many girl bands and boy bands are formed. They are not just good in singing but also dancing. Add on their good looks and these make them the perfect eye-candies.

The Rise Of Kpop Boy/Girl Bands

Many of these Kpop groups are young and vibrant, portraying infectious high energy through their fast songs and live dances on stage and in their music videos. A few of them even went on to become worldwide sensation, such as Wonder Girls with their hit song 'Nobody' and its catchy dance moves. This is followed by Big Bang and recently Psy for his youtube hit 'Gangam Style'.

In generic term, Kpop dance is the dance moves that you see in the music videos of Kpop idol groups like SHinee, Brown Eyed Girls etc. Due to the Korean wave culture, Kpop dancing is increasingly popular among the youth, young adults and Korean wave fans of all ages, where many aspire to dance like their idols or to what they see in the MVs.

This trend has spread across asia, including Singapore, and even to US now. If you are also a Kpop fan, perhap its time to try something new this year by picking up a new hobby like Kpop dance!
